Q&A with Quyen, 2016 Better Together Volunteer

Quyen (right) graduated from UC Berkeley in 2014 with a BA in Biology and is currently pursuing a Master in Public Health at the University of San Francisco. She works as a Program Associate for the Health Trust, a nonprofit. After graduation, she hopes to design health programs to better serve San Jose’s Southeast Asian community.

Q: What might one be surprised to know about you and what do you do during your free time?

A: I used to dance contemporary, Tahitian dance and hula dance. Maybe one day I’ll get back into the rhythm and bust a move or two! During my free time, I love to play volleyball; I compete in an adult league. I’m what they call a foodie and I love to explore good eats and take pictures for my food diary. I also enjoy spending time with my family.

Q: How did you hear about AACI and why did you choose to volunteer during Better Together 2016?

A: I first heard about AACI through work. The Health Trust had set up a Vietnamese diabetes self-management workshop at AACI and I was one of the co-facilitators. That’s how I got to meet some AACI staff and learned about AACI’s mission. When a friend mentioned her experience volunteering for Better Together last year, I felt curious and decided to check it out!

Q: What did you like the most about the event?

A: I loved the videos that were shown, they were well put together and it was a great way to showcase the wonderful work AACI has done for the community. I also really enjoyed the Fund-A-Need portion and was very happy to see the whole room showing solidarity and support to serve the Asian American community.

Q: What was your experience like as a volunteer?

A: I had one of the best volunteering experiences ever! I was very impressed with how I was treated. The AACI staff members were very friendly and caring of my well-being. From beginning to the end, I was given clear and precise instructions. I’ve volunteered for a lot of different organizations and AACI is one of my favorites so far! Thank you for making my volunteering experience so memorable and congratulations on a successful gala! It was a wonderful event and I’m so happy of the turnout. Until next year!
