Q&A with Jon, HOPE Program Volunteer

Jon grew up in Texas and moved to Silicon Valley after finishing his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at The University of Texas, Austin. He has made a successful career as an engineer in the micro-electronics industry. During his free time, he gives back to the community and is our fantastic HIV Outreach, Prevention & Education (HOPE) program volunteer.

Q: What are your duties as a volunteer for the AACI HOPE Program?

A: I provide free HIV testing and sex education to clients once a week at The Watergarden*. I enjoy meeting new people and being able to help them with making smarter decisions. From time to time, I also volunteer providing testing and counseling during County outreach events organized by the Crane Center.

Q: How is your experience as a volunteer at AACI?

A: I have been a volunteer at AACI for 4 years now and it has been a very positive experience. The AACI employees are very friendly and working here has taught me a lot about nonprofits. I learned a lot about HIV and how it is transmitted during the trainings I attended to become a volunteer. Volunteering has been eye-opening; HIV affects a lot more people than we think! On my very first day as a volunteer, I helped someone get tested who turned out to be HIV positive.

Q: What are your hobbies and what’s on the top of your bucket list?

A: Joining the Peace Corps is my long-term goal. When I’m not working, I enjoy bicycling and travelling the world with my wife and son.  I have been to many countries, including Cambodia, Bolivia and France. My favorite trip so far has been going on a bicycling tour group to Botswana. I enjoyed meeting people face-to-face and seeing how happy they were despite living in much poorer conditions than us in the US. One time, I also drove from the Silicon Valley to the Arctic Ocean. It took me 7 days!
